Masoor Daal Khichdi ( Lentil Rice) Recipe

Masoor Dal Khichdi

Masoor Dal Khichdi ( Lentil Rice) Recipe

Very easy to make and a great source of protein for the whole family. Tastes great with combination of yogurt or pickle. Serve with papad.
  • 1 cup Basmati Rice
  • 1 cup Masoor Lentils (prewashed and soaked)
  • 1 tbsp Vegetable oil
  • 1 finely Chopped onion
  • ½ finely Chopped tomato
  • ½ tsp Mustard seeds
  • 1 pinch of Asafoetida
  • 2 Cinnamon Sticks
  • ¼ tsp Turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp Cumin seeds
  • ¼ cup Chopped coriander
  • Salt to taste
  1. Wash basmati rice and masoor lentil almost half an hour before cooking.
  2. Heat the oil in a covered cooker and add the mustard seeds.
  3. When the the mustard seeds crackle add cinnamon, turmeric, rice, cumin seeds, asafoetida to it and mix it thoroughly.
  4. Now add masoor lentils and saute for 1 minutes.
  5. Add chopped tomato and onions and mix it thoroughly.
  6. Add 4 cups of water and mix it well for few seconds.
  7. Cook on low flame with covered lid for about 25-30 minutes.
  8. Remove from the flame and garnish with coriander leaves.
  9. Allow the extra heat to escape before serving.
  10. Serve with pickle or yogurt for extra taste.

  • 1 cup Split Red Lentil (Masoor Dal)
  • ½ cup Moong Lentil (Dal)
  • 5 slit Green Chilli
  • 1 tblsp chopped Coriander Leaves
  • ½ tsp Turmeric Powder
  • ½ tsp Garam masala
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 tsp Mustard Seeds
  • 1 tsp Cumin Seed
  • 2 chopped Tomato
  • 2 tblsp Oil
  • 1 medium sized sliced Onion
  • 1-2 Bay Leaves
  1. Wash and soak the lentils for 20 minutes.
  2. Heat the oil in a pan, add the mustard seeds, when they crackle add the cumin seeds. Put few bay leaves.
  3. Fry the sliced onions till golden brown, add the green chillies , turmeric powder tomatoes and salt. cook for 3 minutes.
  4. Cook the lentils in a pressure cooker with sufficient water to cook the dal until soft but they shouldn't lose the shape.
  5. Now add cooked lentils in the fried masala and add garam masala.
  6. Cook for a minute and remove from the flame.
  7. Serve hot garnished with the fried onions and the chopped coriander leaves.

Crispy Okra (Bhindi) Fry Recipe

  • 250 gm Okra/Bhindi(medium size)
  • ½ tsp Chili powder
  • ½ tsp Coriander powder
  • ½ tsp Turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp Panchforan (Combination of Fennel +Nigella +Mustard +Fenugreek +Cumin seeds)
  • ½ tsp Salt
  • 1 pinch Asafoetida
  • 1 tbsp Oil
  1. Pre wash the okra 10 min before cooking so it dries well.
  2. Cut the okra in length to 4 pieces and don't forget to remove the head.
  3. Mix coriander, turmeric, chilly powder together and marinate okra with it.
  4. Put oil in the pan and put some panchforan until it starts crackling.
  5. Now fry the okra in high heat for 5 min and then sim the burner.
  6. Once the okra is properly cooked, increase the heat and let it fry for 10 min.
  7. Now put off the burner but leave the pan over heat for some time so it becomes crispy.
  8. Serve hot as side dish with your main coarse.
Don't the cover the pan while cooking else it won't be crispy enough.


Mango Banana Smoothie

With summer fast approaching, I really wanted to share one of my favorite beverage for cooling down. Somehow I have always been a big fan of mango and banana. Putting them together to make a healthy smoothy just sounds perfect. This smoothie is a great blend of taste and health. Easy, delicious, refreshing and almost fat-free. I happened to have a supply of bananas and a mango in my kitchen so I thought of turning them into delicious smoothie.  Must try for summer.

Mango Banana Smoothie


1 cup cubed peeled ripe mango
3/4 cup sliced ripe banana (about 1 medium)
2/3 cup fat-free milk
1 teaspoon honey
1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract


Mix mango and banana with some warm milk in a blender. After it turn into smooth paste add milk, honey and vanilla extract to it and mix it again in blender. Put few ice cubes if you want a real cold drink.  Process until smooth.
